"The Healing Environment"
Western Maryland Hospital Center has a full slate of activities throughout each week, including this
special casino program presented by the WMHC's Therapeutic Recreation Department.
John Wantz, a WMHC resident, with a member of the world renowned "Power Team"
during a recent visit to Hagerstown. Members of the WMHC "Helping Hands Team"
volunteer their services for many special outings.
Through the help of the Western Maryland Hospital Center Auxiliary, a special vehicle was
recently purchased to assist in the transportation of the residents. In this photo, residents
on the Pulmonary Care Unit attend a "Helping Hands Team" outing to see
a spectacular Fourth of July fireworks display.
Gertie Ahern gets an autograph from a member of the famous
Harlem Globetrotters at an appearance at the Hagerstown
Community College arranged by the WMHC "Helping Hands Team."
The "Helping Hands Team" arranged a special "girls' night out" at the Washington County Playhouse.
An absolutely great time was had by all!
Phares Bitikofer, WMHC's Director of Respiratory Therapy and chairman of the all-volunteer WMHC
Grounds Beautification Committee, places wren birdhouses in one of the lovely gardens
that dot the magnificient 13-acre Western Maryland Hospital Center campus.
A ribbon of paved pathways weave throughout the property
allowing the WMHC residents to participate in outdoor activities.
A "therapeutic gardening" program at the Western Maryland Hospital Center
allows the residents to participate in the beautification program.
Currently, a unique area is being developed on the 13-acre campus
that will dramatically expand the program.
One of the highlights of each year's holiday season is the cookie baking when WMHC staff and
residents work together in a truly fun time. Here Cindy Pellegrino,
WMHC's Director/CEO, puts the rolling pin to work at last year's event.
