MIHI has been active in partnering with county and municipal governments
to make the parks in our region accessible for those of all abilities.

About MIHI And Its Quest
For An Accessible Community!

In recent years, MIHI has been strongly advocating to encourage developers and architects to increase the housing stock of homes that are universally designed to accommodate the needs of the disabled and aging population.

In addition to conducting continuing education classes at Hagerstown Community College for Realtors on the "value added" advantage of constructing homes utilizing the universal design concept, MIHI has joined forces with Hagerstown's St. John's Episcopal Church and constructed a totally accessible Habitat for Humanity home on Liberty Street in Hagerstown.

MIHI's Rich History...

Beginning with a campaign to replace picnic tables in many of our state, city and county parks, MIHI's vision expanded rapidly, making a dramatic impact in improving the overall quality of life of our citizens. In the early fall of 2002, MIHI celebrated its fifteenth year with the grand opening of the "Rainbow Connection " Boundless Playground at Washington County's Marty Snook Park in Halfway, MD. The $120,000 accessible park was a joint effort between MIHI, the State of Maryland and Washington County government. In addition to MIHI's focus on improved accessibility in our parks, the organization has sponsored "challenge " baseball and howling for children with disabilities, fishing piers at Devil's Backbone Park in Washington County, and enhanced pathways at the Star Community Lake. MIHI has sponsored fishing tournaments for seniors, kids and those with disabilities beginning in 2001 with events at Star Community and the City of Hagerstown's Pangborn Park.
